Walking Dead

Walking Dead (Walker Papers #4)by C.E. MurphyThis is the fourth instalment in the Walker Papers series. I feel like I have waited forever for this book to come out because the author has been busy writing two other series, a monthly comic book and, you know, a ton of other stuff. Meanwhile, I was all, "I want a new Walker Papers, bitch!" and the author was all ambivalent to my pleas because she doesn't know me from Adam and had no idea I was crying to the  heavens and shaking my fists just to get a new dose of Joanne Walker. So, I guess I can't blame her. You're off the hook, Murphy. This time.Based on the title of this book I had an inkling that perhaps we'd be encountering zombies and I was wary of reading it because, well, I don't like zombie anything. And it seems like everything is all about zombies these days. Fine for my husband, but not for me.And.. as I am writing this up I am trying to think of how that horse fits into the story at all. And I don't think it does. Huh.But I digress... I started this book about 2 months or so ago and couldn't really sink my teeth into it. It wasn't the book's fault, I was just not in the Urban Fantasy mood. In the last 3 weeks I have been and have been going through all the UF stuff I have bought since MAY! I wasn't sure if I would have to reread the first 5 chapters or not and I dove into the story feet first. Luckily the story was still fresh in my mind, even after putting the book aside for a while. It starts off close to Halloween, with a Halloween party co-hosted by Joanne and ghosts erupt from a cauldron in the middle of the room. The next few days are filled with trying to figure out what caused the ghosts to appear, the theft of a mystical cauldron from a museum and black magic which covered the city and was possibly going to raise the dead. There were zombies, sadly for me, but there were also spirits and ghosties and a Celtic God that Joanne had a sarcastic rant at that cracked me up (and I totally saw myself in that scene, because I am known for the occasional inappropriate sarcastic rant at people myself ;)). The ending of the story even surprised me, which made me happy.Oh, there was even a stalker-ish insurance adjuster. I liked him.Whereas I didn't find Walking Dead as humourus as I have found the previous books, it did have it's great moments (like the outburst at Cernunnos). I found myself enjoying the story more as it moved along even though I was sort of "meh" at the start of the book.I will be looking forward to the fifth Walker Papers which is due out sometime in 2010 per the back of this book. I hope it's true! The Walker Papers
